Hi Everyone,

I am finally restoring C18 Serenity (a somewhat perplexing name for this vessel) and need to replace the stolen outboard.

She will be baseed at Alderley near Stroud and go down the Karuah River from Allworth to access Port Stephens.

I know that for racing a light motor is the go, but I will want her to quickly chew up the nm's for everyday use. I would love to turn her into a bowrider for the river to Port Stephens run.

So to the question - what is the most power outboard a Careel Mark 1 can carry with safety. Quiet running is good too. Thanks.

Please remember here too, that we are talking about a vessel that takes T-bones and Turtles in its stride and whose continued existence is due to Vern, love and a fair bit of just plain mystery.

Anyway, it will be good to get her sailing again. I will also be re-rigging her and probably be updating the mainsale - so would be grateful for advice on the options there too.

Hi Rachael,

Good to hear from you! A few of us have occasionally wondered what happened to Serenity. Sounds like you've decided to keep her for a while?

To answer the question - David Rose rates them at a maximum of 10 hp. Top Note who occasionally posts here used to have a 9.8 hp outboard on the back of his Mk I and it fairly flew along.

Rachael.

I'm just down the road from you at Raymond Terrace.
Buhawi has a 9.8hp Tohatsu on it , which weighs 27kg. It was on the boat when I bought it.
I like the motor, it's been very reliable and pushes the boat along easy, fuel econ, seems OK to me, there would be cheaper running available I'm sure.
Just before the recent Nats, a friend lent me his old Suz. 5hp L/S for that event, however it didn't fit properly, so I used my own Tohy. (when sailing and the motor tilted / laid over it got in the way of the steering, as it sat right down low and hard up against the transom) It weighed 24.2kg.
I know there is light 5hp out there, for race purposes, but it seems to me you need to also make sure the new one for yourself, fits your own boat correctly.

I don't think you'd get any outboard to get a C18 on the plane so you just need something to push it along at hull speed. 5 upwards will do this.

As to the little 5's, the Tohatsu (and therefore Mariner and Merc) two stroke weigh 20kgs per their specs.

However, for cruising along their single cylinder will drive you mad with it's vibration. Look up PDANDY's notes on his 6hp single four stroke - he fixed a lot of his vibration with a proper 'yacht prop' and there's a new 6hp Toey that has an extra long leg and a charging circuit.

The Toey 9.8 that Don mentions is the same size as their 8 just different carb and higher revs. Most twin two strokes weigh 27kgs, their four stroke brothers are about 38kgs.

I understand that four strokes use much less fuel (which of course you don't have to mix) and while their noise is about the same, they make it at a lower frequency which makes them sound quieter.
