When to switch from regular jib to storm jib

Postby Drifter » Thu Jun 14, 2018 10:35 pm

Hi all,

Just a quick random question. Thinking of going out over the weekend and wind strength predicted around 16-20 knots. Will be sailing solo or with inexperienced crew on mark I careel 18. Is is better to rig the storm jib and not bother with regular jib? Far easier to decide when rigging than switch when its too strong.

Cheers,

I would think about shortening sail for anything above 15 kts. A balanced rig and not overpowered is much more comfortable sailing. If you are getting lots of weather helm, you may have too much power aft of the centre of resistance. That can be resolved with a reef in the main too. A jiffy reefing system is a good idea and makes it easy to pull in a reef on the water.

There's an old saying along the lines that if you're wondering whether it's time to reef then it's time to reef. :D
