Surf to Shorncliffe Rally / Cruise 25,26 February 2017

Postby paul trotter » Fri Nov 18, 2016 11:01 am

Surf to Shorncliffe Careel Rally / Cruise (Draft format for feedback)

Date: 25th to 26th February 2017

Logistics:

Friday 24th - Drive boat to Southport Yacht Club and Launch. Return car and trailer to Shorncliffe Public Boat Ramp. Return via train and public transport or we organise some drivers. Late afternoon swim in the surf and evening meal and showers at club. Retire to boats on pontoons.

Saturday 25th - 8am departure motor to northern tip of wavebreak island and set watches when we pass the line of the northern rock wall. Arrive and record times between the red and yellow mark off Canaipa Point. Raft up at Canaipa Point and enjoy RQYS facilities (to be negotiated). Timing trip is optional.

Sunday 26th breakfast at the beach opposite - set iphones and le mans start off the beach or agree on start venue further north. Sail to Shorncliffe and finish at leads off Cabbage Tree Creek. Record times as desired.

Adjourn to QCYC for a beer and celebrate a great trip.

For obvious reasons this would be run as an organised cruise and some may chose to sail faster and we may compare times at the end.

This event sounds a terrific idea.
For you blokes up nth it makes a great prelude or warm up just prior to the Marley. :) :!: :?:

I don't want to rain on your parade but may I suggest that Sat 25th is probably a bad choice of date.
High tide at Gold Coast Seaway will be 7.27am at 1.6m so you will be battling into the tide all the way from the Gold Coast to Caniapa.
It wont be so bad if you get a good strong SE breeze and can set spinnakers but if there is any north in the breeze it will be really hard and frustrating.
I just did the Surf 2 City in a similar tide (High 8.35am 1.7m) and at times we had almost 2 knots of tide against us.
At the entrance to Coomera River near Couran Cove we were reading 2.8k on the log and Red Channel marker was stationary beside us for a good 5 mins. This was in an easterly breeze of 5 to 8 knots.
Took us over 7 hours to get to Eric Early Light, much of it under spinnaker or with cracked sheets on the big Genoa.
For that part of the race we averaged just over 3.5k

Cheers etc.

mmmm, great point made about tide.

Maybe we should reverse the cruise?

****edit****

Brain now switched on - Tides generally run in from the North. There will be some pull in the opposite direction at the Spit and the Jumpinin bars, but otherwise the tides should be favourable for both days...:-)

I mentioned weeks ago that it would be a spring tide and that we might be better off a week earlier or later with a neap, but Paul posted that the tides go in all directions along the way, and wasn't concerned about it.

Also, the tide should be a help on the Sunday, and Paul has made the booking.

Perhaps the easiest mitigation at this stage would simply be to head off earlier in the morning, say 05:30 or so?

Plenty of light at that time still in February.

Hang on - Brain now switched on;

Tides generally run out to the North. There will be some pull in the opposite direction at the Spit and the Jumpinpin bars, but otherwise the tides should be favourable for both days...:-)

Okay guys review the intial instructions on this post.

The Southport Yacht Club Marina is booked for Friday night and I will be driving my Challenger back to Brisbane with the trailer on Friday to drop off the trailer at home. I will return with my Challenger that afternoon and can take a maximum of four passengers. It will be up to everyone to make their own arrangements. I think Mr Byrd has confirmed the need to be a passenger and I suspect Cookie and Don Marshall will join me which leaves only one spare spot.

It should be a great rally and I'm looking forward to it.

Maybe Dave had to make a choice of this S to S or Marley which is in a couple of weeks & he's quietly preparing his boat.
I know he'd love to do the Vic event & champing at the bit. Next year Dave & all for the 50th !

Yep. Something like 10 years in a row missing the wedding anniversary to head south. Not this time. I have a very understanding wife.

So MPONR next year Don, can only cope with one 50th at a time ...:-)
