Wanted - Careel 18 Storm jib

Postby paul trotter » Sun Mar 15, 2015 2:37 pm

Guys,

These are probably the most underutilized sail in the Careel Sailrobe.

I would like to add a second hand one to my collection to give it a whirl in some blowy conditions. Carlos told me the Mark 3 sails well under one with a reefed main.

The storm jibs are small and made from pretty stiff Dacron.

Anyone got one they never use and would be happy to part with it?

Happy to pay a few dollars.

Lucky me. The generous captain Byrds sent me a couple of small jibs and a cut down main.
Not sure what constitutes a storm jib but here is a pic of the smallest one. it's only about 2.5m2.

G'day Trotts

Did you want the larger of the 2 jibs Byrds sent me?

Seems a bit funny to send it back over as you guy's are nearish one another aren't you?

Not sure if it's what you're after but thought I should offer.
It's dated 1976 and the cut as is would need you to mount a jib sheet block forward of the mast.
But if the small one survives strong winds and a flogging (haven't tested in a big blow yet) then that other one will sit in my shed for who knows how long.

Keep it Max...at 1976 it might fall apart in transit.

I need a second hand one that has the really stick dacron and small.

Alas I went out yesterday with Cookie in my Nellie in some chop and moderate airs and Nellie sailed like a dog without the Genoa. I think I need to perfect the use of Genoa and reefed main before I launch into a storm jib.

I'd still be interested if someone has something local.

I'm still looking Mr Byrd,

I'm not sure it would get much use but it would be fun to go out onto the Clarence or Lake Macquarie in a gale on flat water with a heavily reefed main and a storm jib.

Herr Fritz had one that he leant me once but I never got to use it. Have you ever used it Herr Fritz?

So I'm still on the hunt to complete my sail wardrobe for Nellie.

PS Greg Ellis of Manders Sails at Springwood did a great job with my new main, Don cur jib and genoa and I would recommend him!
