Camera Mount for C18

Postby Luka » Sun Jan 03, 2016 2:38 pm

I've bought an action camera, cheap version of a Go Pro, and want to mount it to the rear of my C18.
I'm guessing about a meter behind the stern so it captures all the cockpit action.
Has anyone done this or have ideas about how to do it?
What about DIY ideas for a gimbal that keeps the camera vertical when the boat heals?

There was a guy down in Victoria who did this with his GoPro and had some good solutions. Things like an extendable boom (I think it was just a broom handle) off the pulpit pointing back at the bow and off the stern. He posted a few links to youtube videos here somewhere. I'll see if I can find them.

That's funny, I can't find any posts here about it but I know there were some. I did manage to dig out the youtube videos though:

You can see in that third one that he didn't use anything too high tech. Looks like a painters pole. I remember he said it was telescopic.

Yes, some great interesting footage shot there by Steve from his beautifully prepared mk2.

Thanks Max.
I've seen these, they're great videos.
The camera must have been fixed in position. The boat stays still but the horizon tilts as the boat tacks.
I'm trying to think of a cheap way to pivot and pendulum the camera so it stays level as the boat tacks so you can see the motion of the boat.
I've now got some ideas from You tube but still looking for something Careel specific.

Oh, a gimbal. This one seems to work OK though I'm not sure where you'd get the handcuff looking bit:
