Gunwale fiberglass cap

Postby lejudd » Mon Sep 07, 2015 11:22 pm

G'day,

I am looking for a replacement for the bow gunwale cap for my MK3.

Can anyone suggest where I might be able to obtain one.

Thanks,
Leighton

Not sure what you're referring to here Leighton. If it is the stainless steel fitting that the forestay connects to then that would have to be fabricated. They are not standard items.

It is a fibreglass cover over the gunwale rubber at the bow. It is under the stainless steel fitting for the forestay.

In that case, David Rose Yachts (he's in the phone book) is your best bet as he has the moulds that the fibreglass bits are made from. Otherwise it'd probably be a case of trying to cast a mould from someone else's boat.

Hello Leighton and Max. I might be able to help here. I am attaching a photo from my 18 MK3. Let me know if this is the part you are mentioning. Cheers

If the photo doesn't work, it is the V shape out-most part of the bow.

I was trying to avoid making the mould if not necessary, so David Rose sounds like a good avenue to follow.

Thanks Carlos. Mine is very similar to yours, except mine didn't have the extra piece over the very nose.

It looks like it has been stretched out of shape. I could probably make a mould from it if necessary, but it would need a little extra work to get it in good shape. I think that this cap is unique to the MK3.
Someone before me has had a go at resealing the gunwale rubber on the boat. I am trying to slow down some of the "rainwater leaks" and tidy it up a little at the same time.

This is my broken one:

Originally mine was also like that one. However it did brake easily in contact with a pontoon.
There was the expensive and lengthy option or the trip to Bunnings. Twelve dollars and half an hour later the materials were at hand and the repair done in readiness for the next race/cruise. That was some ten or more years ago. So, plastic extrusion did work for me. The extra piece of tubing on top of the gunwale is just to protect from anchor/chain movement.

Leighton,, F/ glass repair it yourself or I could do it for you. I might even have the old one off my 3 up the shed which you could have but it would need a re spray as it was brown in colour

Thanks Don. I have considered a repair on it and may do that. Fibreglass work is not something that I am very familiar with and I appreciate the offer of assistance. I have done a little research on the subject so I have a basic understanding of what needs to be done.

Leighton,

I recently had this same item manufactured and supplied by David Rose. He has the moulds so can make it pretty quick.

Hi David,

I phoned and spoke to Pam last week. (David wasn't available at the time.)
Pam suggested I talk to Seton about it as he is familiar with the fibreglass work for the boat.
Do you know if David Rose made yours or if it might have come this way also?

Thanks for the info.

Regards,
Leighton

Pretty sure boys that Seton would have knocked up those noses.

Hi Leighton,

I can't say if Seton made it or not. I ordered it through David Rose with a new sliding hatch and I sent the cheque to David.

I think a third party made it but I can't remember who it was.

Regards

David
