How to post pictures on this site

Postby maxm » Wed Jan 30, 2008 8:18 pm

This is the most often asked question! I reckon I explain this to someone at least once every couple of weeks so please don't feel embarrassed if you are having problems - most people do.

Basically, there are two ways to do it - the easy way and the good way. I'll explain each in separate posts.

The Easy Way
----------------

This is to post your pictures directly on this site. The only problem with that is that this site has only limited space and so you will only be able to post a few pictures (how many depends on their size). Once you hit your upload limit you won't be able to post any more.

How To Do It
---------------

Start posting a new message as usual but don't submit it. If you look down at the bottom of the window, you should see the "Attachment Posting Control Panel".

In there is a button labelled "Add an Attachment". Click it.

You'll now find that there is a new panel at the bottom of the window titled "Add an Attachment". In there is a button labelled "Browse". Click it.

This opens up the standard file selection dialogue ... navigate to the folder on your computer that has the picture in it then double-click on the picture itself.

This should close the file selection dialogue.

Now click on the "Add Attachment" button and the file that you selected will be uploaded to the site. When you submit (or preview) your post, it will appear in all its glory.

Simple, eh?

2nd Option - Photo/ Image hosting website

There are many options like www.photobucket.com www.flickr.com etc etc etc.

I like photobucket as it gives you the string to cut and paste direct to the forum post. Here is a shot of uploaded images in photobucket. You can see the various strings below the image for http, forums, etc

Image

Before you start make sure you have shrunken your image as other wise we all have to scroll across the page.

This can be done two ways

1a- Using Windows XP select all images and right click "Send by mail recipient" This will give you a option to shrink the images. Once the email loads then save them to a temp location, waiting to be uploaded.

1b - Once you upload to say photobucket you can then edit the image and resize by selecteing website. Just take longer. In the below image you select edit from the main screen, see above image, then select resize as per below image, then select website.

Image

2 - Now once your images are ready for uploading, log into photobucket, make a folder filing system and upload the photos.

3- You can the browse and add your photos ready to upload

4- Select upload and wait

5- Once the image is uploaded, just copy the text below for forum [IMG] one. Just cut and paste this in and your done.

BTW ... photobucket is only one hosting site, as Steve says. Other popular ones are

tinypics - www.tinypic.com (very easy to use, gives the string for you to paste into your message but you have to upload pictures one at a time)

ImageHosting.com - www.imagehosting.com (OK to use, multiple images can be uploaded and gives the string to paste in to your post).

It's really a matter of trying a few and finding one that suits you.

It occurred to me that this little "How To" has changed quite a bit since the recent site upgrade. The basics are still the same - upload to a picture hosting site like photobucket and then post a link to it here. But the mechanics has changed a tad and we're also able to embed videos now. Anyone want to have a tilt at some updated instructions?
