Re: shroud turnbuckle

Agree with what Fritz says. For mine, if you're replacing one turnbuckle then you're probably better to replace all of them. And the U-bolts while you're at it. Even if you don't replace the U-bolts, at least pull them out for an inspection, especially that one that you use to haul the whole boat ou...

C18 Mk I For sale in Qld

I believe this is C18/126 "Freya" an early-ish Mk I although retrofitted with a sliding hatch, anchor well and updated rudder. Looks like the keel pin has also been redone at some point (all of this assuming that I've got the right boat). If the keel pin has been redone then chances are th...

Re: For sale - Careel 22 / 77 - Chi 2 - in NSW

Hamish, You're not the first to break a mast in a mishap. The boat (not mine!) I saw going through this tragedy had their mast replaced under insurance. Have you tried contacting your insurer? I've had two stolen outboards replaced by my insurer. Even if you still sell, it could be worth putting in ...

Re: Stuck keel

The rear pair of side supports need to be lowered all the way before launching and retrieving, Col. The hull is curved which means that the middle pair of supports are lower than the rear ones. If you don't lower that rear pair the result is that you end up trying to lift the whole boat up and over ...

C18 For Sale in NT

They don't often come up for sale in the Territory! This one is listed on Gumtree for $6,750 in Leanyer, Darwin. She has been used as a motor boat but all the sailing bits are supposed to be still there and would just take a little bit of work getting them all back on the boat. Other than that there...

Re: Stuck keel

Col, My hull number is 429. I am wondering if this means the boat has the heavier keel. If anyone has some comments they would be greatly appreciated. I got a message overnight from Doug who originally built the boat. He advises that your keel is actually fiberglass over a stainless steel space fram...

Re: Stuck keel

Good luck Col, we'll keep our fingers crossed! From experience, sometimes even weird little things can jam it. I've had two instances of a stuck keel which I finally worked out was due to the keel being installed ever so slightly out of line. My reading of the forum suggests completely raising the k...

Re: Stuck keel

Col, I'm pretty sure that the hydraulics on the C18s are the same as the hydraulics on a C22. In which case the only thing the hydraulic does is lift the keel. Gravity lowers the keel. If the hydraulics aren't working (eg a leak) then the keel would drop and wouldn't lift at all. So it sounds like a...

Re: C18 MK1 Charmhaven NSW

That wooshing sound we heard was the rush of people to buy this boat. Sold!

The Celt was well known as being equipped with every device known to man. Not surprised it would sell quickly at that price but in just 1 day seems unreal.

Re: Trailer winches

Neither one. Steel wire can kink, losing strength and it'll eventually split strands which can act like meat hooks on your hands. If it snaps under load, it can flick back and cause a real injury. Straps build up rapidy on the winch drum as you're winching making it harder to pull the boat in. Inste...

Re: Rudder question

There ya go, a nice illustration of the fact that we each have our own routines and solutions. There's no one answer. :D One thing to keep in mind though (at least in NSW anyway) is that you can't obstruct visibility of the number plate. It's supposed to be visible across a 180 degree arc. So if you...
