Re: CRUISE 5th-6th Sept. 20. 'Frying Pan Bay' L. Macq.

Frying Pan Bay is without a doubt THE best boat ramp in all of Lake Macquarie. Maybe all of NSW. The ramp is in a very sheltered little bay that has a channel running out to the rest of the lake which itself is fairly well sheltered. There is a ramp, a good jetty and a small beach area all in the en...

Re: boom as gin pole

Short answer is I don't know but it sounds like a good idea. The problem you run into with using any kind of mast raising system on a C18 though is securing the mast laterally while you raise it. The shrouds won't do that until the mast is vertical because of their position aft of the mast.

Re: Clarence Classic Cruise 4-10 October 2020

OR! Add another 7-8 hours travelling and you can be in Pittwater for the big 50th anniversary get together. Yes, agreed, it would be a big day of driving. On the other hand you could all spend a couple of days celebrating in Pittwater where it all began, hopefully with a combined NSW/QLD/VIC fleet A...

Re: Weather helm

First sail in Reslless today. Went very well but extremel weather helm! I have a sore arm from pushing in the tiller to combat it. Were you pushing the tiller or pulling it? And were you sitting to windward? If you were sitting to windward and having to push the tiller then that sounds to me like l...

Re: New Owner

If I have a lifting outboard bracket do I need a long shaft or short ? It depends on the bracket but you could probably go with either one. Although personally I'd prefer a long shaft. Only because I had a lifting bracket on my C18 when I bought it. The thing ended developed a crack but that wasn't...

Re: New Owner

So the keel winch is inside the cabin near the sampson post, is that right? That's unusual and not original. On the other hand, if the winch is in the cockpit, just outside the companionway then that's a different story. It could be a Mk 2! Sliding hatch is also probably a later modification but a r...

Re: New Owner

Hi Dean and welcome to the forum. What number is the boat? And to answer, yes, originally most of them had a jib furler. Although it isn't really a furler - you can't really furl the sail part way and keep sailing. The jib has to be fully unfurled for sailing so it's more of a quick storage system f...

Re: Keel up or down on permanent mooring

Hi Marcus and welcome to the forum! Someone who kept his boat on a mooring told me that keel up is definitely the way to go. The main reason for this is that it's very hard to antifoul up inside the case properly and so you will probably get marine growth in there. In his case, it got to the point w...

Re: Wanted - Careel 18 (Sydney area)

The closest C18 to Sydney that's currently listed is up near Newcastle but if that's no good for you then keep checking in. There may be another coming up for sale in Sydney. I'll leave it there because that may or may not happen but if it does, we'll try to make sure it's included in these listings.

I like my 2016 Mitsi Challenger Paul. But yeah... replacing the timing belt at 100K was an expensive exercise. Not looking forward to doing that again.
